ATLANTA, Ga. –
Gwinnett County Police Chief Brett West recognized two Buford Recruiting Station noncommissioned officers May 24 for actions they took to save a life and detain an armed suspect last month.
Staff Sgt. Richard Borges and Sgt. Austin Childers were in a local store April 5 when they heard gunfire. They ran to the parking lot that had been shot multiple times after an apparent road rage incident.
Without regard for their own safety, Borges and Childers instinctively began administering first aid, not concerned that the alleged shooter was still in the area. The two Soldiers order the gunman to get on the ground. The alleged shooter complied with the Soldiers’ demands and laid down in surrender while the two continued to provide aid to the victim.
With the victim suffering from gunshot wounds to the chest, arm and leg, the two recruiting NCOs applied a chest seal and tourniquets to the extremities while reassuring the victim he was going to be alright. Upon the arrival of paramedics, the pair provided detailed information about the victim’s wounds also assisted law enforcement in their investigation of the incident after the suspect was taken into custody.
