Command Sgt. Maj. Matthew E. Hughes entered the Army Jan. 3, 1997. He completed One Station Unit Training at Ft Knox, Kentucky, where he was awarded the Military Occupational Specialty of 19D, Cavalry Scout. Upon completing One Station Unit Training he was assigned to the 3rd Squadron of the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment at Ft. Polk, Louisiana.
Hughes' assignments include: driver, gunner, and truck commander, L Troop, 3/2 ACR, Ft. Polk, Louisiana; range control operator and firing desk NCO, Ft. Knox, Kentucky; recruiter, Indianapolis Recruiting Battalion; station commander, Indianapolis Recruiting Battalion and Chicago Recruiting Battalion; senior drill sergeant, Ft. Benning, Georgia; special operations recruiter, Ft. Benning, Georgia; first sergeant, Salt Lake City Recruiting Battalion; Master Leaders Course Distance Learning Instructor, Ft. Bliss, Texas. Hughes also has one deployment to Bosnia and one deployment to Afghanistan.
Hughes graduated the Basic Recruiter Course, Army Recruiting Station Commander Course, Drill Sergeant Course, Instructor Course, Guidance Counselor and Operations Course, Airborne and Air Assault Course, and the Army Recruiting First Sergeant Course. Hughes also graduated from the Brigade and Battalion Pre-Command Course. Hughes also earned a bachelor’s degree from Ashford University.
Hughes' awards and decorations include: Meritorious Service Medal with 3rd oak leaf clusters; Army Commendation Medal with 3rd oak leaf clusters; Army Achievement Medal with 2nd oak leaf clusters; Army Superior Unit Award with 2 oak leaf clusters; Army Good Conduct Medal 7th Award; National Defense Service Medal; NCO Professional Development Ribbon with numeral 5; Army Service Ribbon; Army Drill Sergeant Badge; Army Instructor Badge; Army Recruiter Gold Badge thru Glen E. Murrell Ring; Parachute Badge; Drivers’ Badge; Air Assault Badge. Hughes is also a member of the distinguished Sergeant Audie Murphy Club.
Hughes is married and has two children.
