Command Sgt. Maj. Matthew E. Kunk was born in Springfield, Ohio. In November 1997, he enlisted into the U.S. Army as an Infantryman and attended Basic Combat Training at Fort Benning, Georgia.
His military education includes the Warrior Leader Course, Advance Leader Course, Senior Leader Course, First Sergeant Course, Airborne Training, and he is a graduate of the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy Class 65. While assigned to USAREC, he has attended the Army Recruiter Course, Station Commander Course, Guidance Counselor Operations Course, and the USAREC First Sergeant Course.
Previous to being assigned to USAREC, Kunk served in various Infantry positions from Rifleman to Squad Leader. He began his Recruiting career in January 2002, when he was assigned to the Indianapolis Recruiting Battalion. There he served as a Recruiter and a Station Commander. In July 2006 he was assigned as a Team Leader for the 3rd Recruiting Brigade Mobile Recruiting Training Team. He then went on to serve as a Special Forces Recruiter in the Special Operations Recruiting Battalion. He held the position of First Sergeant in the Jacksonville Recruiting Battalion from January 2009 through May 2011 and also in the Tampa Recruiting Battalion from June 2011 through July 2012. Kunk served as the Operations Sergeant Major for the Tampa Recruiting Battalion from July 2012 through June 2014. His most recent assignment was as the Battalion Command Sergeant Major of the Columbus Recruiting Battalion.
Kunk’s awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (4rd award), the Army Commendation Medal (4th award), the Army Achievement Award (7th award), Good Conduct Medal (6th award), National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon (4th award), Armed Forces Ribbon, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, the Parachutist Badge, the Expert Infantry Badge, Australian Jump Wings, the Gold Recruiter Badge, the Recruiter Ring, and the Glen E. Morrell Award.
Kunk’s civilian education includes a Bachelor of Science from Liberty University and Masters of Education from Southern New Hampshire University.
