Command Sergeant Major David L. Porter was born in Peru, Indiana, and raised in Columbus, Ohio. He began his Army career in October 1997 after graduating from Saint Clairsville High School in Saint Clairsville, Ohio. After completing One Station Unit Training for Infantry school and Airborne School at Fort Benning, Georgia, he was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. While assigned at Fort Bragg, he served as an Infantryman, Team Leader, and Squad Leader for Bravo Company 1/325 Infantry Regiment. While assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division, he was deployed to Kosovo and Macedonia.
CSM Porter was then assigned to the United States Army Recruiting Command in 2002 where he served as a Department of the Army Selected Recruiter and Station Commander in the Dallas Recruiting Battalion and Station Commander in the New Orleans Recruiting Battalion. He also served as a Senior Operations NCO for the Miami Recruiting Battalion, an Instructor at the Recruiter and Retention School located at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, the First Sergeant for the Warren Recruiting Company in the Cleveland Recruiting Battalion, and Command Sergeant Major for the Minneapolis Recruiting Battalion.
CSM Porter’s awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Achievement Medal, the Good Conduct Medal with one Silver Knot, the National Defense Service Medal, the Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development 5th Device, the Army Superior Unit Award, the NATO Medal, the Kosovo Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Medal. CSM Porter is also a recipient of the Gold Recruiter Badge with three sapphires, the Gold Recruiter Ring and the prestigious Glen E. Morrell Order of Recruiting Excellence. CSM Porter is a graduate of the Warrior Leadership Course, Advanced Leader’s Course, Senior Leader’s Course, the Army Recruiter Course, the Station Commander Course, the Recruiter Master Trainer Course, the Guidance Counselor and Operations Course, the Basic Instructor Course, USAREC First Sergeant Course, and the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy, Class 67.
CSM Porter attained a Bachelor of Science in Management Communication from Amridge University and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Texas at El Paso.
