U.S. Army Recruiting and Retention College Command Sergeant Major

Command Sgt. Maj. Craig L. Russell

Command Sgt. Maj. Craig L. Russell is a native of North Providence, Rhode Island and enlisted in the Army in July 1994.

He attended Basic Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

Russell has served as a squad leader, station commander, assistant inspector general, first sergeant, battalion command sergeant major, and brigade command sergeant major. His previous assignments include 3rd Battalion 4th Battalion 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment 82nd Airborne Division Fort Bragg, North Carolina and 43rd Area Support Group Fort Carson, Colorado. Since entering USAREC in 2001, his assignments include Great Lakes Recruiting Battalion, 3rd Brigade; USAREC Headquarters Fort Knox, Kentucky; Tampa Recruiting Battalion, 2nd Brigade; Phoenix Recruiting Battalion, 5th Brigade and 5th Recruiting Brigade Headquarters.

Russell’s military education includes Airborne School, Air Assault School, Basic Leader Course, Advance Leader Course, Army Equal Opportunity Leader Course, Army Recruiter Course, Station Commander Course, Senior Leader Course, Master Leader Course, Inspector General Course, Master Resilience Trainer Course, United States Army Sergeants Major Academy Class 64, and Battalion and Brigade Command Sergeant Major Development Courses.

Russell’s civilian education includes an Associate of General Studies from Pikes Peak Community College, Bachelor of Science, Graduate Certificate in Quality Management, Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, and a Masters of Business Administration from Trident University.

Russell’s awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters, the Army Commendation Medal 6th award, Army Achievement Medal with five oak leaf clusters, Army Superior Unit Award, Good Conduct Medal 8th award, National Defense Service Medal 2nd award, Global War on Terrorism, Humanitarian Service Medal, the Gold Recruiter Badge with three sapphires, the Recruiter Ring, the Glen E. Morrell Award, Recruiting Excellence Medallion, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, British Army Parachutist Badge, German Armed Forced Efficiency Badge (Silver). He is also a Sergeant Audie Murphy inductee.

Rusell became the senior enlisted leader for the Recruiting and Retention College at Fort Knox, Kentucky, on November 21, 2019. He serves a dual role as Commandant for the Recruiting and Retention Non-Commissioned Officers Academy.
