Command Sergeant Major Owen J. Smith is a native of Richmond, Virginia. He is a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School Class of 1997. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in June 1997, where he attended Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He is a former military police officer.
Smith became the U.S. Army 5th Recruiting Brigade command sergeant major Oct. 18, 2019.
His assignments include the 49th Quartermaster Group, Fort Lee, Virginia, the 21st Military Police Company Airborne, Fort Bragg, North Carolina; 65th Military Police Company Airborne, Fort Bragg, North Carolina; where he deployed to Operation Enduring Freedom, Afghanistan.
Smith entered the United States Army Recruiting Command in September 2003 as a detailed recruiter with an assignment to the Chicago Recruiting Battalion, Chicago, Illinois. He was later assigned as a station commander in the Glenview Recruiting Company, Chicago Recruiting Battalion. In August of 2008, he was nominated and selected to become the U.S. Army Recruiting Command Command Sergeant Major’s Liaison NCO and reassigned to Fort Knox, Kentucky. In August 2009, he took responsibility of the Louisville Recruiting Company and served there until July 2011.
Smith was called on again to assist leading the New Orleans Recruiting Company from August 2011 to June 2013 as the First Sergeant. After completing his last tour as a first sergeant, Smith was assigned as a division chief for the Recruiting Company Commander/First Sergeants Course and Battalion/Brigade Pre-Command Course at the U.S. Army Recruiting and Retention School, Soldier Support Institute, located at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He departed in 2015 to attend the Noncommissioned Officer Leadership Center of Excellence (Sergeants Major Acadmey). His last assignment was the battalion command sergeant major for the 1st Medical Recruiting Battalion located at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland.
Smith is a graduate of the Basic Leaders Course, Advance Leaders Course, United States Army Military Police School, Senior Leaders Course, DA First Sergeants Course, Recruiting First Sergeants Course, Equal Opportunity Leaders Course, Defense Hazardous Materials Course, Defense Reutilizing and Marketing Course, Petroleum Vehicle Operators Course, Supervisor Development Course, Field Hygiene and Sanitation Course, Army’s Basic Recruiter Course, Station Commander Course, Army Basic Instructors Course, the Senior Enlisted Joint Professional Military Education Course, Battalion/Brigade Pre-Command Course, Command Sergeant Major Development Course and the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Course (Class 66). His civilian education consists of a Bachelor’s of Science in Criminal Justice from Columbia Southern University and a Master’s Degree in Healthcare Administration from Grantham University.
Smith’s awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (6th award), the Army Commendation Medal (7th award), the Army Achievement Medal (3rd award), the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal and the Gold Recruiter Badge with three sapphires. He is also a member of the prestigious Sergeant Audie Murphy Club.
Smith is married to Zandra and they have four children Christopher, Christine, Christal, and Christan.
