Deputy Commanding Officer

Col. Adam D. Smith

Col. Adam D. Smith is a Distinguished Military Graduate from Oregon State University who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in animal science and was commissioned in the Adjutant Generals Corps and branch detailed Armor in 2000. He is a graduate of the Armor Officer Basic Course, Adjutant General Captains Career Course, Command and General Staff College, the National Defense University, and the U.S. Army Airborne School. 

Smiths first assignment was with 1st Battalion, 63rd Armor Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Vilseck, Germany, where he commanded 1st Platoon, Bravo Company, served as the Executive Officer for the United States National Intelligence Cell, Sarajevo, Bosnia, and as the Battalion S-1. He was later assigned as the Brigade S-1 for 3rd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division in Vilseck, Germany, and while deployed to Baqubah, Iraq, during Operation Iraqi Freedom II.

After graduating from the Adjutant General Captains Career Course, Smith was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas, where he served as a Strength Manager for the United States Army Transition Teams.  He then commanded the 1st Replacement Company, and Headquarters and Headquarters Company, United States Army Garrison, Fort Riley, Kansas before being assigned as the Brigade S-1 for the 1st Sustainment Brigade where he deployed to Taji, Iraq, during Operation Iraqi Freedom 07-09.

After graduating from the United States Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, he was assigned to Headquarters United States European Command (EUCOM) in Stuttgart, Germany, where he served as the NATO Strength Manager and later Executive Officer to the EUCOM J-1.

Smith was then reassigned to the Deputy Chief of Staff, G-1, Headquarters Department of the Army, where he served as a Plans and Operations Officer in the Readiness Branch, Enlisted Career Systems Division, Directorate for Military Personnel Management.  He later served as the Military Assistant to the Army G-1.  From 2016 to 2018 he served as the Division G-1 for the 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.  His last assignment was as the Chief, General Officer Management Office, Office of the Chief of Staff of the Army. 

Smiths awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (1 OLC), the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (2 OLC), the Joint Commendation Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal (1 OLC), the Joint Service Achievement Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, and the Parachutist Badge.
