Command Sergeant Major Michael R. Hartzell entered the Army in April 1999 as an Automated Logistical Specialist and underwent Basic Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Lee, Virginia.
CSM Hartzell has served in every leadership position from team leader to battalion operations sergeant major. His previous assignments include service as the Operations Sergeant Major for the Milwaukee Recruiting Battalion, Deputy Commandant of the 79R/79S NCO Academy, First Sergeant of the Clarion Recruiting Company, an Instructor/Writer at the U.S. Army Recruiting and Retention College, and multiple assignments as a station commander in the Beckley, Harrisburg, and Pittsburgh Recruiting Battalions.
CSM Hartzell’s professional military education includes U.S. Army Sergeants Major Course Class 69, the Warrior, Advanced, and Senior Leaders Courses, the U.S. Army Basic Airborne Course, the U.S. Army Basic Army Instructor Course, the Station Commander Course, and the Army Recruiter Course. He also holds a Master of Science Degree in Organizational Leadership from Columbia Southern University.
Highlights of his awards, decorations, and distinctions include multiple awards of the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service, the Korean Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service Medals, the Basic Parachutist Badge, the Gold Recruiter Badge, the Master Recruiter Badge, the Gold Recruiter Ring, and the Glen E. Morrell Medallion.
CSM Hartzell and his wife Lisa reside in Fleming Island, Florida. They are proud parents of four outstanding children.
