Duty Station of Choice puts you in control

By Capt Memory Burch USAREC PAO

For those considering joining the U.S. Army, the question often arises: Where will I be stationed for my first assignment? What if you could select your first location, allowing you to choose where your Army journey begins?

Thanks to a program the Army began in 2022, qualified applicants can choose their first duty station from a wide list of locations across the U.S. and overseas, including Germany, Korea, and Hawaii.

Whether you are hoping to be closer to family, experience a new region of the country, or live abroad, this program gives you greater control over your Army future. You will have the unique opportunity to select your duty station before even reporting to basic training.

How it Works

  • Eligibility: The Guaranteed Duty Station of Choice program is available exclusively to non-prior service applicants
  • Available Jobs: The program covers 83 different jobs across various career fields.
  • ASVAB and Job Qualifications: Your Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test scores and specific job qualifications will determine which duty stations you are eligible for. Higher scores may open additional options for assignments.
  • Service Commitment: To participate, applicants must sign a contract committing to a minimum of three years of service.

This program marks a shift toward a more personalized approach to Army enlistment and reflects the Army’s evolving approach to recruitment. Traditionally, future Soldiers were assigned to duty stations based on the needs of the Army. Now, applicants can factor in their personal circumstances and goals.
