Army Brings Recruit One Step Closer To Fulfilling Dream

By Marenzo Domingo 2nd Recruiting Brigade

REDSTONE ARSENAL, AL – For military members, the call to service is a powerful stimulus for enlistment. The motivations may differ, but the consequences are profound and will often leave a poignant, lasting impression on those who heed the call.

For Sophie Marie Stewart, that call was answered on Jan. 29, 2025, as she took part in a U.S. Army enlistment ceremony at 2nd Recruiting Brigade HQ in Redstone Arsenal, AL.

Stewart, a native of Buchanan, VA., grew up in a small town of a few thousand. During high school, she developed a strong interest in the medical field, pushing her to earn certifications in Basic Life Support and Certified Nursing Assistant, which led to her employment at Carrington Place Nursing Home for the past year and half.

“My role as a CNA has been incredibly rewarding, deepening my passion for healthcare,” said Stewart, "I’m eager to grow further and contribute in even more meaningful ways.”

The oath of enlistment ceremony was administered by Maj. Lauren Hall, a close family friend, whose own inspiring journey as a U.S. Army Physician Assistant was a contributing factor to Stewart’s decision to enlist.

“It is truly a privilege to enlist Sophie, and I am honored to play a small role in shaping her future. I have no doubt that she will succeed in whatever she pursues, her unique combination of medical expertise and abilities makes her an undeniable asset to the United States Army,” said Hall.

Sgt. 1st Class Chuck Vandell, Commander for U.S. Army Recruiting Station Huntsville-Madison, credits Hall and the 2nd BDE command in helping get Stewart onboard the Army team.

“Maj. Hall has been instrumental in providing Sophie Stewart with career guidance and information about the Army process, we had excellent support particularly from Command Sgt. Maj. Thomas Kenny and Master Sgt. Fred Claridy,” said Vandell.

U.S. Army recruiter, Staff Sgt. Chance Schutter, also played an important role in the enlistment process, providing assistance and guiding Stewart every step of the way.

“I feel a great sense of fulfillment in being part of this pivotal moment, in helping her embark on a path that would shape her future as she contributes to something larger than herself,” said Schutter with pride. “Sophie worked hard to achieve her dream of joining the military, her dedication and perseverance will help her succeed,” he added.

Stewart’s lifelong aspiration is to become a Registered Nurse and ultimately pursue a career as an Army Physician Assistant. She has elected to enlist as a 68T Animal Care Specialist, a significant step towards attaining her dreams.

For those individuals on the sidelines who are considering a career in the United States Army, Maj. Hall has a message.

“Take the leap of faith! You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. The military presents countless opportunities that are there for the taking. I started as an Army Logistician and later seized the chance to attend the Interservice Physician Assistant program. After becoming a PA, I applied for the Army Medical Department’s Long-Term Health Education and Training program, and this fall I’ll be pursuing a PhD in Transformative Education at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.”

Stewart is committed and looking forward to becoming the hardest working and most dedicated 68T in the United States Army.

Her family and friends, along with the soldiers from U.S. Army Recruiting Station Huntsville-Madison and 2nd BDE ‘Team Eagle,’ wishes her the best as she fulfills her dreams and aspirations.
