McCarthy reinforces importance of recruiting mission

USAREC Public Affairs

The Honorable Ryan McCarthy, who currently is performing the duties of the secretary of the Army, emphasized the importance of the recruiting mission during a visit to U.S. Army Recruiting Command here July 2.

His visit to USAREC headquarters and the Recruiting and Retention College was intended to help him gain a deeper understanding of the inner workings of the accessions enterprise and see where he can provide support.

“People are the foundation of our business,” McCarthy told USAREC leaders and staff members. “We need to increase the propensity to serve.”

He made it clear recruiting is a priority for him and that it is more than just USAREC’s responsibility – finding the future leaders of the Army is a team effort.

“I am a recruiter, too,” he said. “Army senior leaders have to do more. We have to go out into the country to be recruiters ourselves … We have to engage the community; they need to know who we are and what we are doing (as an Army).”

USAREC leaders highlighted the progress made so far this fiscal year through efforts to modernize how the command connects with the American people, to include virtual recruiting, digital marketing content, esports, and the new immersive training program for RRC students.

USAREC’s commanding general, Maj. Gen. Frank Muth, also discussed the current status of the fiscal 2019 recruiting mission.

“I haven’t felt the momentum in the command like I feel right now,” Muth said. “I feel very good. We are going to make it.”
