FORT KNOX, Ky. –
Sgt. 1st Class Shayne Hayes, a native of McHenry, Illinois, serves as a recruiter at the Bloomington Recruiting Station in Bloomington, Indiana. He was recently recognized by the leadership of U.S. Army Recruiting Command as a standout performer in the command.
“I wanted to serve my country as an Infantryman because I liked the idea of actually being able to defend my nation and fight for my nation if the need ever arose,” Hayes said. “Why join the football team if you do not want game time.”
Hayes fulfilled his dream by joining the Army as an infantryman in 2016.
“I serve in the US Army because I believe in defending my country, upholding its values, and protecting the freedoms of the American dream that we cherish,” Hayes said. “It’s honestly a calling that provides a sense of purpose, pride, and honor, knowing I’m part of an organization bigger than myself.”
While serving as a recruiter Hayes finished a bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership from the University of Charleston West Virginia and completed a graduate certificate in strategic leadership in 2023.
“While working at USAREC, I have been able to provide mentorship, and career opportunities to those who need it most,” Hayes said. “The Army allows young adults to start a life of their own. They’re getting their shot at the American dream and getting opportunities they wouldn’t have had without the US Army.”
Hayes attributes his success as an Army recruiter to hard work, determination, and the support of those closest to him.
“There are a few contributing factors to my success,” Hayes said. “I have a loving wife who supports my career, which helps more than words can describe. Also, the support from mentors who guided me and the opportunities I’ve been afforded along the way is another big factor. Each of these factors has played a crucial role in shaping me into the person and leader I am today.”
When not recruiting, Hayes enjoys hunting, fishing, shooting and spending time with his family.
