Meet Your Recruiter – Sgt. 1st Class David Staples

By Lauren Reho USAREC Public Affairs

As we celebrate Black History Month, we proudly highlight the incredible stories of our African American Recruiters and their inspiring journeys that define the profound contributions of black men and women within the Army.

Sgt. 1st Class David Staples, originally from Chicago, Illinois, serves as a Recruiter at the San Marcos Recruiting Station.

“Black History Month is time set aside to remember the triumphs and adversities that black America experienced,” Staples said.

Staples says he can be a role model for other black Soldiers and Recruiters by continuing to “show that success can look like us.”

Growing up, his role model was Carl Brashear whose legacy was depicted in the movie “Men of Honor.”

“Adversity helped shape me into the person I am today,” Staples said. “The greatest gift I ever received was the opportunity to fail.”

Staples says that he has faced challenges that he has had to overcome by being black.

“That’s why I serve the Army. No matter your race, religion, sexual orientation or gender, you can be all you can be.”
