Command Sgt. Maj. Sean Cox enlisted in the U.S. Army as a Combat Engineer Sgt. in October of 2007, after a 4-year stint as a Combat Engineer in the U.S. Marine Corps ending in 2005. Serving as a squad leader, his first duty assignment was with the 511th Sapper Company in Ft. Campbell, Kentucky. It was in this unit that he completed his second tour to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
In 2010, Cox was selected for recruiting duty and was assigned to the Montgomery Recruiting Battalion, Prattville Recruiting Station. Upon reclassification in 2012, he was reassigned as the station commander of the Montgomery Recruiting Station. In 2015, he was selected by the Recruiting and Retention College to become an instructor/writer. In 2017, he was fortunate enough to return to the Montgomery Recruiting Battalion to serve as the first sergeant for the Mobile Recruiting Company. His next assignment was with the Tampa Recruiting Battalion as the Orlando Company first sergeant. Since graduating on the Commandant’s List from the Sergeant Majors Academy (Class 72), he has been assigned as the operations sergeant major for both the Nashville and Montgomery Recruiting Battalions.
Cox holds a Master of Science in Management from Excelsior University and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Post University. He has graduated from all required levels of the Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development System. He is also a graduate of the following Army Courses: USAREC Command Sergeant Major Course, Pre-Command Course, Recruiting Company Commander and First Sergeant Course, Center Commander, Recruiter, Master Resiliency, Basic Instructor, Faculty Development, and EOD Clearance Agent Courses.
His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (5th award), the Army Commendation Medal (3rd Award), the Army Achievement Medal (6th award), and others. He has earned the Master Recruiter Badge, Recruiter Ring, Gold Recruiter Badge, Basic Army Instructor Badge, Combat Action Badge, Air Assault Badge, Col. Robert L. Manning Achievement Medal, and he has been named a Kentucky Colonel.
