Chicago Command Sergeant Major

Command Sgt. Maj. Thomas S. Buchanan

Command Sgt. Maj. Thomas S. Buchanan enlisted in the United States Army in November 1999 as a unit supply specialist (92Y). He completed Basic Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Lee, Virginia. His first assignment was a unit armorer, HHT, 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment Fort Carson, Colorado. Following this assignment, he served as a Supply Sergeant in K Troop 3/3 ACR. At his next assignment, he served as a supply sergeant in E Company, 1st Battalion 81st Armor Regiment, Fort Knox, Kentucky.

Buchanan joined U.S. Army Recruiting Command in 2006 and was assigned to the Toledo Recruiting Company, Cleveland Recruiting Battalion. He has served across the United States including San Diego Recruiting Company (Southern California Recruiting Battalion), 6th Recruiting Brigade HQ (North Las Vegas, NV), Jackson Recruiting Company (Baton Rouge Recruiting Battalion), 1st Recruiting Brigade Headquarters (Fort Meade, Maryland), and Southern California Recruiting Battalion (Mission Viejo, California). He has performed duties as a detailed recruiter, recruiting team leader, station commander, brigade market and mission analysis NCOIC, first sergeant, brigade senior master trainer, and battalion operations sergeant major.

Buchanan’s Military education includes Basic Leader Course, Advanced Leaders Course, Senior Leaders Course (Distinguished Honor Graduate), Army Recruiter Course, Station Commander Course, Master Fitness Course, First Sergeants Course, and the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy (Class 72). His military awards include Meritorious Service Medal (2nd oak leaf cluster), Army Commendation Medal (1st silver oak leaf cluster), Army Achievement Medal (4th oak leaf cluster), the Army Good Conduct medal (8th Award), National Defense Service Medal, the Gold Recruiting badge w/ 3 sapphires, the Recruiter Ring and the Glen E. Morrell Award.

Command Sergeant Major Buchanan earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Trident University International. He is currently attending the University of Texas El Paso for a Master of Leadership. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family. He actively competes in recreational runs, obstacle courses, water sports, soccer, fishing, and golf.
