Portland Recruiting Battalion Command Sergeant Major

Command Sgt. Maj. Stephen Coghill

Command Sergeant Major Stephen Coghill was born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska. He enlisted into the US Army in 2002 while attending St. Mary’s Catholic High school. He completed Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, GA and was awarded PMOS 11B. 

His military schools and civilian education include all levels of the NCO Professional Development System. He has completed Pre-Command Course as well as the Command Sergeants Major Development Course. He is a graduate of the Resident Sergeants Major Course, Class 72. He is a graduate of Recruiting Company Commander and First Sergeant Course, Guidance Counselor Operations Course, Station Commander Course, Army Recruiter Course, SHARP Certification Course, Advanced Trauma Life Support Course. He is a graduate of Liberty Law School with a Jurisprudence degree in American Legal Studies, a graduate of Post University with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, and a graduate of Command and General Staff College with a bachelor’s degree in Leader and Workforce Development.  

CSM Coghill’s assignments include 1st Battalion 32nd Infantry, Fort Drum, New York; Bakersfield East Recruiting Station, California; Paso Robles Recruiting Station, California; Indianapolis Recruiting Battalion, Indianapolis Indiana; Evansville Recruiting Company, Evansville Indiana, Chicago Recruiting Battalion, Chicago Illinois.   He has served in the positions from Team Leader to Operations Sergeant Major. 

CSM Coghill’s awards and decorations include: Meritorious Service Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation with seven Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Achievement Medal with six Oak Leaf Clusters, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon with numeral 5, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal,  Iraq Campaign Medal with star, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, NATO Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon with numeral 2, Army Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Valorous Unit Award with two Leaf Clusters, Meritorious Unit Award with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Expert Infantryman’s Badge, Master Recruiter Badge, Gold Recruiting Badge, Army Recruiter Ring, and the Glen E. Morrell award for Recruiting Excellence. CSM Coghill is a member of the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club. 

CSM Coghill is married to his wife Ashley, and they have one son Westley and one daughter Aurora.
