Sgt 1st Class Tyler S. Nelson is a marksmanship instructor for the Instructor Training Group with the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, Fort Benning, Georgia.
Nelson was born in Graham, Texas and raised in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Nelson has served in every position within a line Infantry Platoon from Rifleman to Infantry Platoon Sergeant. He served in the 82nd Airborne Division, the 25th Infantry Division, the 194th Armor Brigade, the 199th Infantry Brigade, and the 3rd Cavalry Regiment. He has been a member of the Army Marksmanship Unit from August 2022 to present. The following are some highlights over the course of his career.
Nelson joined the Army in July 2006 and completed Basic and Infantry Training at Fort Benning, Georgia. He then completed the Basic Airborne Course, and was assigned to A Co 2-505 PIR, 82nd Airborne Division in January 2007, where he served from Rifleman through Fire Team Leader. In September 2010, Nelson was assigned to Fort Wainwright, Alaska where he served with the 1/25 Stryker Brigade as a Squad Leader and Weapons Squad Leader in A Co, 1-24 IN. In May 2014 Nelson was assigned to 194th Armor Brigade and served as a Drill Sergeant and Senior Drill Sergeant in C Co, 2-47 IN. In 2017 Nelson served as an Instructor at the Marksmanship Master Trainer Course at Fort Benning, Georgia. In 2020 Nelson was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas and served as a Platoon Sergeant for Ironhawk Troop 3/3 CR. He was assigned in August 2022 to the Instructor Training Group, USAMU.
Nelson’s schools include: Infantry OSUT, Basic Airborne Course, Basic Leader Course, Advanced Leader Course, Senior Leader Course, U.S. Army Drill Sergeant School, Stryker Leader Course, and the Marksmanship Master Trainer Course.
His awards include, One Meritorious Service Medal, Eight Army Commendation Medals, Five Army Achievement Medals, and One Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Five Good Conduct Medals, Two Iraq Campaign Medal, and One Afghanistan Campaign Medal. He has been awarded the Parachutist Badge, Combat Infantry Badge, Excellence In Competition Rifle and Pistol badges (bronze), and the Order of St. Maurice.
