Sgt. 1st Class John R. Browning was born in Jackson, Georgia, June 16, 1987.
He joined the Army May 2015 with an interservice transfer from the Marine Corps. He was assigned to the United States Army Marksmanship Unit Action Shooting team May 2015 as a shooter/instructor.
He entered the United States Marine Corps July 2005. He graduated from Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina, in October 2005.
After graduation from the School of Infantry, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, he was assigned to 3rd Battalion 2nd Marines. Initially assigned to the Scout Sniper Platoon after passing selection, he served as an RTO and deployed to Habinnyah, Iraq in 2006. During the next pre-deployment cycle, he graduated from the Scout Sniper Basic Course and the Urban Sniper Course. He deployed again to Al Qaim, Iraq in 2008 where he served as a Team Leader in the Scout Sniper Platoon. He then graduated SERE school and SOTG Reconnaissance and Surveillance Course. In 2009, he deployed with the 22nd MEU, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, to the Persian Gulf and served as Team Leader in the Scout Sniper Platoon. Browning was then reassigned to 3rd Battalion 5th Marines, Camp Pendleton in the beginning of 2010. He deployed six months later to Sangin, Afghanistan, as a Team Leader in the Scout Sniper Platoon. In 2011, Sergeant First Class Browning was accepted and reassigned to the Marine Corps Combat Shooting Team, Weapons Training Battalion, Quantico, Virginia.
In conjunction with his duties as a competitor, Browning has graduated from Foreign Weapons Instructor Course, Methods of Entry School, Combat Marksmanship Coaches Course, Sergeant’s course, and Advanced Leaders Course.
Browning competes in USPSA pistol competitions throughout the country and is a Grand Master class competitor. Browning has competed in many major 3 Gun matches across the country to include Northwest Multi-gun (1st place), Rockcastle 3 Gun (5th place), FNH 3 Gun (2nd place), Rocky Mountain 3 Gun (5th place), USPSA Multigun Nationals Limited (2nd Place) and multiple High Military trophies.
