WEBVTT 00:00.009 --> 00:02.231 I'm Staff Sergeant Shane Butler and I'm 00:02.231 --> 00:04.287 with the Army marksmanship unit , so 00:04.287 --> 00:06.570 today is the 6th man , the national 00:06.570 --> 00:09.529 trophy team match which consists of 6 00:09.529 --> 00:13.390 shooters , a coach , and a captain . Uh , 00:13.399 --> 00:15.621 just for today in this event , uh , the 00:15.621 --> 00:17.920 wind has proven to be challenging . Uh , 00:18.000 --> 00:20.167 it is a headwind . A lot of people are 00:20.167 --> 00:22.000 dealing with it , so there is no 00:22.000 --> 00:24.111 section of the range where anybody is 00:24.111 --> 00:26.444 excluded from those challenges . So the , 00:26.444 --> 00:28.611 the challenges that that has is , uh , 00:28.611 --> 00:30.722 if the wind is blowing right in front 00:30.722 --> 00:32.944 of you or blowing straight down range , 00:32.944 --> 00:35.056 you know , a headwind or a tailwind , 00:35.056 --> 00:37.729 then . It can change in value at any 00:37.729 --> 00:39.849 second and it could cost you several 00:39.849 --> 00:42.209 points at any given moment and then 00:42.209 --> 00:44.265 it'll go right back to the condition 00:44.265 --> 00:46.431 that you were just shooting in so it's 00:46.431 --> 00:48.153 trying to stay on top of those 00:48.153 --> 00:50.209 conditions while also trying to make 00:50.209 --> 00:52.376 sure that 6 shooters stay in tune with 00:52.376 --> 00:54.431 each other and then also you get all 00:54.431 --> 00:56.431 the guns married up with each other 00:56.431 --> 00:58.653 that way when the coach is able to make 00:58.653 --> 01:00.653 wind calls everybody's in sync with 01:00.653 --> 01:02.876 each other . To prepare for this team , 01:02.876 --> 01:04.820 I mean it takes it takes months of 01:04.820 --> 01:06.987 training , years of training , uh , in 01:06.987 --> 01:09.320 order for us to come out and , you know , 01:09.339 --> 01:11.339 try and claim a victory because you 01:11.339 --> 01:13.450 know that's how we compete and that's 01:13.450 --> 01:15.580 that's our main goal is to lessons 01:15.580 --> 01:18.099 learned , take it back to our unit so 01:18.099 --> 01:20.339 we can enhance lethality that way but 01:20.339 --> 01:22.506 then also we're here to win as well as 01:22.506 --> 01:24.617 part of our mission . Statements . So 01:24.617 --> 01:26.561 this game specifically the service 01:26.561 --> 01:28.785 rifle portion and even the long range 01:28.785 --> 01:31.144 portions that we shoot is , it is 01:31.144 --> 01:33.205 target shooting , meaning that it is 01:33.485 --> 01:35.565 mastery of the fundamentals . The 01:35.565 --> 01:37.785 circles are small , scores are getting 01:37.785 --> 01:40.349 higher every year , and . You know , 01:40.959 --> 01:42.848 I'm not saying that it's any more 01:42.848 --> 01:44.903 important than any other game . It's 01:44.903 --> 01:47.070 just this one specifically that's what 01:47.070 --> 01:49.292 it trains , that's what it focuses on , 01:49.292 --> 01:51.515 and you have to master the fundamentals 01:51.515 --> 01:53.626 and if you want a place in the top or 01:53.626 --> 01:55.848 even get a victory out of it , uh , and 01:55.848 --> 01:57.959 then we take all of those lessons and 01:57.959 --> 02:00.181 we apply those lessons to anything else 02:00.181 --> 02:02.292 that we shoot or we try to instruct . 02:02.620 --> 02:04.842 I'm Specialist Amber Kingsel . I'm with 02:04.842 --> 02:06.953 the Army marksmanship Unit . I'm with 02:06.953 --> 02:09.300 the service rifle team . I was a 02:09.300 --> 02:11.300 competitive shooter as a junior . I 02:11.300 --> 02:13.522 competed against the , the unit , the , 02:13.522 --> 02:15.689 the service rifle team , for 7 years , 02:15.689 --> 02:18.022 and once I finally got up to score-wise , 02:18.022 --> 02:20.078 they started looking , and I started 02:20.078 --> 02:22.464 asking if they had a spot . Uh , the 02:22.464 --> 02:25.675 level of competence of competence and 02:26.225 --> 02:28.447 competition that they want you at , I , 02:28.447 --> 02:30.558 uh , really enjoy that extra pressure 02:30.558 --> 02:32.785 of you have to be the best and then 02:32.785 --> 02:35.345 just the , the team atmosphere that we 02:35.345 --> 02:38.024 have . We competed in the national 02:38.024 --> 02:40.899 trophy team match , the 6th man . Um , 02:40.979 --> 02:43.529 we ended up taking it today . Pretty 02:43.529 --> 02:46.860 happy about that . This competition is 02:46.860 --> 02:48.860 important for the marksmanship unit 02:48.860 --> 02:51.339 because it helps us broaden our reach 02:51.339 --> 02:53.300 on the service members and the 02:53.300 --> 02:55.419 civilians on , on helping them be 02:55.419 --> 02:57.586 proficient with marksmanship . You can 02:57.586 --> 02:59.697 always be better and that if you ever 02:59.697 --> 03:01.752 have any questions we want to answer 03:01.752 --> 03:03.863 them . Staff Sergeant Jared Derosiers 03:03.863 --> 03:05.975 and I'm with the US Army marksmanship 03:05.975 --> 03:08.086 Unit's Service rifle section . Yeah , 03:08.086 --> 03:09.975 it's important for instructors to 03:09.975 --> 03:12.141 compete in competitions just like this 03:12.141 --> 03:13.975 one , for the sheer fact that in 03:13.975 --> 03:16.869 competition things improve and there's 03:16.869 --> 03:19.070 a lot of innovation when people are 03:19.070 --> 03:20.903 always trying to compete and win 03:20.903 --> 03:23.126 against each other , so we're always up 03:23.126 --> 03:25.348 to date on the latest equipment and the 03:25.348 --> 03:27.570 latest ways of training to get better . 03:27.570 --> 03:29.681 So I think that's a that's a two part 03:29.681 --> 03:31.792 question . So on one side of things , 03:31.792 --> 03:31.279 competing in competition makes me a 03:31.279 --> 03:33.360 better instructor because we are 03:33.360 --> 03:35.471 proving that we understand what we're 03:35.471 --> 03:37.638 doing . So we're constantly trying new 03:37.638 --> 03:39.860 methods of training , new methods of of 03:39.860 --> 03:41.804 actually competing . We're testing 03:41.804 --> 03:43.860 those in the field at competitions , 03:43.860 --> 03:45.916 and then we're . Taking that back to 03:45.916 --> 03:45.505 the force , but then kind of like , 03:45.625 --> 03:47.681 like I was just saying on that first 03:47.681 --> 03:49.458 part , we're constantly , we're 03:49.458 --> 03:51.625 watching everybody else . We're always 03:51.625 --> 03:51.304 trying to have a leg up on everybody 03:51.304 --> 03:53.360 else , trying to win at competitions 03:53.360 --> 03:55.637 and so we're always trying new methods , 03:55.637 --> 03:58.175 um , to achieve success . A typical day 03:58.175 --> 04:00.705 of training , um , for me , I try to be 04:00.705 --> 04:02.538 very intentional with , with the 04:02.538 --> 04:04.761 specific aspect of my shooting that I'm 04:04.761 --> 04:06.983 always trying to improve . If I just go 04:06.983 --> 04:09.094 out there just to shoot , just to put 04:09.094 --> 04:11.261 some rounds downrange , I'm not really 04:11.261 --> 04:11.175 focused on some , uh , on a particular 04:11.175 --> 04:13.460 aspect I'm trying to get better at . So 04:13.759 --> 04:15.703 the biggest thing for me is always 04:15.703 --> 04:17.926 being intentional about what I'm always 04:17.926 --> 04:16.970 working on .
